You will want to head out to your local department store and purchase plastic bins with lids in a wide variety of colors. For example, you will want to keep all of your holiday decorations together and have them in red plastic bins with lids. You can keep all kitchen items together in yellow bins. Lawn and garden or tools can all be kept together in green plastic bins. Just make sure that you are making a note that you can tape to the side of the storage unit wall, as that will help you remember what color of bins holds the items that you need.
Make Use Of The Hidden Space
Depending on just what it is that you are storing in your self storage unit, you might find that there is actually a lot of hidden space that you could be taking advantage of. For example, ovens, refrigerators, dresser drawers, freezer chests, wooden chests, and microwaves have some room for you to store some things in them. While you cannot attach shelves to the walls, you can line the walls with freestanding shelving units. Just make sure that you are using shelving units that are made of sturdy metal. Plastic shelves can warp over time with excessive weight and humidity. Wood shelves can rot or become moldy if too much moisture gets into the air. It is also important to make sure that you are placing all of the heaviest items on the bottom shelves in order to prevent it from toppling over and breaking things or injuring someone. Stick lighter items, like stuffed animals, clothing, curtain, blankets, or lightweight decorations, on the top shelves.
